Court of Appeal in Kamchatka Again Upheld Verdict Against Married Couple, Jehovah's Witnesses. They Got Long Suspended Sentences
Kamchatka TerritoryOn April 8, 2025, the Kamchatka Regional Court approved the decision of the court of first instance against Yelena and Sergey Chechulin — 6 years suspended sentence for organizing the activities of an extremist organization. This is how the court qualified discussing the Bible with friends.
The court issued the first guilty verdict under the article on participation in the activities of a liquidated legal entity. Then the believers were given 2 years of suspended sentence. The prosecutor's office sought to reclassify the article to a more serious one, but the appellate instance did not toughen the sentence. However, the court of cassation returned the case for reconsideration to the court of first instance, which toughened the sentence three times, and the second court of appeal upheld this decision.
The Chechulins still consider themselves innocent of extremism. Sergey voiced his position in court as follows: "Neither I nor my wife want to harm either the state or people."
